What possesses some people to hurt animals, especially baby animals?

I would really appreciate an honest answer and neutral as to why not, as should be treated, as this is something we all already know. I am looking for, based on prevention, not punishment, as the author itself is a child. Captmhunt (# 3): What part of "non-judgment" Did you not get?

I heard that kids who hurt animals may be a some kind of trauma in their lives. This can turn into something later in life and the abuse could then move to a human target. If it my son, I speak to a counselor, child psychologist or a psychiatrist to find the root cause of the problem. He or she is obviously not listening to people who say him or her not to. Punishment probably will not solve this problem, just increase the intensity of animal abuse and / or make more frequent. Good luck.
