protect the dining room table like a cat?

I just got a new table beautiful dining room, imagine my surprise when I woke up the next morning and find all the scratches over the top. The store is going to replace the table tomorrow, but I was hoping for some idea to protect the new dining room table. I scold my cat, but hes quite stubborn. I do not want to buy a table pad now. Any ideas?
