Take notice both women and men. Contrary to what you think one of the more important tasks in life is cleaning house. You may think it’s something that you should rush through as fast as possible, but it’s more important than you think.
How you clean house tells the world something about you. And it tells your children something about you as well.
Your ability at house cleaning is an expression, often, of how you grew up. Did your mother keep a neat clean house? If so then there’s a good chance that you will too. After all, we all learn from our mothers, and that includes domestic skills. If mom was house proud chances you will be too.
Although some of us had great role models for these sorts of things, some of us didn’t. Not all of us had parents who taught us to run a household well.
That was probably because mom and dad never learned the important skills of housekeeping from their parents.
Personally I involve my kids in all the household chores. They grizzle when they have to do their bit of drying dishes, vacuuming, cooking or whatever other tasks I set them to do earn their pocket money each week.
It’s an important part of parenting that the kids learn all aspects of running a house. It’s as important to me as many other of life’s skills.
One of the most important skills to impart to children in my view is cooking. Start them small when young of course, but if you get them cooking when young they’ll love it and progress to full meals over time.
I have been eternally grateful that my own parents taught me to cook and that’s a skill that has been very important to me for my whole life. Even though I’m a man I do house cleaning and cooking and more, because my parents showed me how to do it.
Children emulate their parents. If you engage in regular household chores they’ll assume that’s normal. If you keep a clean house they’ll see that and copy it. Even better, actively engage them and show them how it’s all done and you’re setting the groundwork in your kids for some essential life skills.
But if you keep house so badly that you can’t invite your friends to dinner because of embarrassment, then your kids will probably do the same when they grow up.
I’ve spent quite some time considering this. Recently I’ve put together a list of lots of small tips and tricks that are useful for anyone who needs to learn more about house cleaning. The sorts of things that so many of us learned from our moms, but so many didn’t.
The sort of tips that you ought to know, and use, every week.
So remember, if you’re a parent, one of the most important things you can do for your kids is to help them learn the importance of, and skills of, housekeeping. It’s your duty as a good mom or dad.
